Welcome back to yet another edition of the Weekend Games Corner. In case anyone is keeping track, this is the 25th entry in our long-running series. We know, it’s not that exciting. However, it’s all the proof we need that there are Android, iOS, and Flash users out there who are always on the lookout for quality new games. We’re the same way- it’s difficult to find games that are genuinely good among all the boring apps that get released every week.
This week is all about tower defense. You know the genre. It’s all about placing towers strategically to guard a castle keep or a princess or whatever. The point is that you use automated defenses to prevent swarms of bad guys from getting into the base. Tower defense is a strategic affair and requires little active control- two qualities which make it perfect for Flash and mobile devices. The genre has done quite well on those platforms. Here are some recent TD apps which we liked.
Fantasy Kingdom Defense HD (Android)
Despite the thrillingly generic name, Fantasy Kingdom Defense HD is a respectable fantasy-themed tower defense game. You are in charge of protecting a beautiful castle… or something… and so you have to stop monsters from getting in. The story isn’t the point.
As far as tower defense games go, Fantasy Kingdom Defense HD is quite respectable. The gameplay is your standard TD. Place units to attack incoming monsters. There’s a decent amount of strategy involved, too. Wizards slow enemies with ice so the knight can attack them.
We couldn’t delve too deeply into the strategy, though, as half of the units are locked. New defenders can be purchased with either coins or jewels. While coins are plentiful, jewels are not. You can get jewels either by grinding a lot of levels or paying real money.
This is a rather serious qualm we have about Fantasy Kingdom Defense HD- it’s almost at “pay-to-win” levels. This game is very aggressively set up to separate you from your wallet. The damndest thing is that even with the microtransactions, you have to pay another fee in order to unlock the full game.
Still, if you can get past the heavy-handed approach to micropayments, there’s some fun to be had. Fantasy Kingdom Defense HD comes with a lot of levels and even different difficulties. The graphics look extremely polished as well.

Toy Defense HD (iOS)
Toy Defense HD is all about protecting your base from invading soldiers. The theme here is World War I, but with toys. It’s an interesting approach. At least the graphics look good.
The game uses a different approach to keeping things varied during missions. You can place towers only in certain spots. These spots change every round. The towers are your standard machine gun/artillery units. Toy Defense HD is not the most innovative of TD games.
There is one really cool feature, though. As your towers kill enemies, they earn experience and level up. At the end of each level, you can pick the three best units and take them with you into the next battle. This is an absolutely ingenious idea.
As usual, Toy Defense HD supports microtransactions. You can pay some real money in order to quickly gain “stars.” Stars can be spent on the moderately deep persistent upgrade system. There’s a good bit of replay value in here.
We liked Toy Defense HD. It’s certainly not innovative by any stretch, but those of you looking for a quality TD experience will enjoy it.

Bloons Tower Defense 4
As if Bloons Tower Defense 4 needs an introduction. The latest entry in the long-running TD series stands as the best in its series and one of the best in the entire genre. As far as Flash games go, Bloons TD 4 is really good.
It helps that the game has a ton of stuff to do. There are multiple maps, multiple difficulty levels, and a huge list of towers to help you defend against those evil balloons. With new towers that unlock every level or so, there’s a lot to do.
Plus, BTD4 features a manually aimed balloon gun. This is brilliant, as it keeps players occupied in a game that would normally let them sit back a little more than is good.
Bloons Tower Defense 4 was easily our favorite TD game we played this week. The friendly theme, huge amount of content, and completely free price (no microtransactions here) make it a hell of a deal. Go play this.
