Is a program as simple as AdwCleaner effective?

At first glance, AdwCleaner seems to be a little too simple to be as powerful a tool as it truly is. If you are experiencing issues with hijacks and toolbar installations in particular, download AdwCleaner and give it a try. You may be surprised at how such a simple tool can eliminate such a bothersome threat from your computer.

I am still unsure. Do I have to click on delete and uninstall or is that done automatically? What does it delete and uninstall? Thank you for helping.

It would be nice if AdwCleaner would inform you about the precautionary measures it takes. I found that after I ran it, my “Preferences” file for Google Chrome expanded quite a bit in size. Inside, I found numerous entries related to adware sites that I hadn’t seen before. I “suspect” these are additions intended to help block the browser from accessing those ad sites, but… AdwCleaner doesn’t tell you this.

In any case, my need for running AdwCleaner was to remove the Adnxs virus that Malwarebytes didn’t detect. AdwCleaner didn’t catch it either. Every time I restart Google Chrome, the Adnxs dot com cookie I deleted reappears. My last resort was to delete Chrome and start all over.

Thanks for letting us know about this issue. Did re-installing Chrome help?

Actually, something compromised Chrome so that it would not uninstall. I had to manually remove it (registry editing as well). After this, I could install Chrome again and the adware is gone.
I made special note of ad related cookies and even with a clean install, a certain set of them appears. There’s no adware to be found and those pesky ads that appeared previously are gone. Google seems to be creating them. They are benign, though.
