Sometimes when you want to have a conversation with someone online, you want to know you’re in a secure scenario. However, there aren’t many options out there for truly securing chat sessions. With Cryptocat, you can do just that. Cryptocat is an open source web app that secures and encrypts online chatting sessions. It can work in Firefox, Chrome and Safari.
We’ll show you how to get started having secure conversations with Cryptocat.
Cryptocat will automatically detect your browser and prompt you to install its browser app.
For this example, we’ll be using Google Chrome.
Click “Download Cryptocat for….”
Now, click “Add to Chrome.”
Then, click “Add.”
Cryptocat will now appear as an app in Chrome for you to use.
Click on the Cryptocat app.
Now, you’ll name your conversation, create your nickname for it and then click “Connect.”
It will take a few seconds for an encryption key to be created for your conversation. This is done every time you create one to offer ultimate security for your session.
When finished, you’ll be logged into your conversation and ready to chat.
At the top right, you’ll be given a toolbar to work with while in the chat sessions.
The first icon, Status, allows you to set a status for the chat.
The second icon, My Info, will give you data on the chat to share.
The third icon, Desktop, will let you set whether you receive desktop notifications while in chat.
The fourth icon, Audio, lets you see audio notifications while in chat.
The fifth icon, Logout, lets you logout of the chat.
You can type in the bottom to begin chatting at the bottom.
In order for others to join the chat, they simply have to enter in the Conversation name you used. By using more complicated Conversation name, you can avoid random people from joining.
