Since storage is so cheap, a lot of us save everything. The problem is that sometimes we store copies of the same file in multiple places. Between your network storage, external hard drives, jump drives, CDs, and your actual hard drive, you could have more copies of the same file than you can count. You may have three or four different versions of the same file, and keeping track of the most current version can be arduous.
Scanning through folders on three or four different drives, comparing files, and getting rid of duplicates can be a nightmare, especially if you have thousands of files to sort. DupeGuru is a free, tiny app that can do the heavy lifting, and identify all of the duplicate files on your system.
After you download, install, and launch DupeGuru, you will see that it has a very simple interface. Click the + icon, and choose the folders you want to compare.
Click on the drop-down menu under state, and choose either Reference or Normal. The Reference folder is the folder that you believe to have the most current or complete list of files. The Normal folders are the ones that DupeGuru will compare to the Reference folder. Click the Scan button to begin the process.
DupeGuru scans every folder and subfolder that you have chosen, and it makes notes of all of the duplicates. Your Reference folder is treated as the system of record, so DupeGuru identifies duplicates in locations other than your Reference folder. When the scan is done, DupeGuru displays a list of all of the duplicate files. You can save the list, so that you can work with the files later, or you can use DupeGuru to take action on the duplicate files.
From the file list, you can choose to see the reference file and the duplicates, or you can choose just to see the duplicate files. If you choose to act on the list, you can also use DupeGuru to move, copy, or delete the duplicate files. Depending on how many files you are scanning, or how many files you choose to act on, it could take quite a long time for DupeGuru to finish a specific action. If you are scanning a few thousand images or mp3s, expect that the initial scan may take over 30 minutes, and the cleanup that follows may take just as long or longer.
With DupeGuru you can identify all of the duplicate files on your system, make a list of them, and choose to copy, move, or delete them. This takes all of the guesswork and painstaking labor out of sorting your files, and cleaning up your hard drives, network drives, and jump drives. It is extraordinarily easy to use, easy to configure, and condenses hours worth of work into a few minutes, and a couple of clicks.
