Hubble Space Telescope is one of NASA’s four “Great Observatories” others being Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, Chandra X-Ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope. Launched in April of 1990, Hubble is one of the most vital research tools for Astronomers. With the final service mission for Hubble completing successfully in 2009, Hubble is expected to provide great insights into the Universe until at least 2014. Hubble will be replaced by its successor, James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
In over 20 years of operation, Hubble has sent a large number of images to Earth. All Hubble data is eventually made available via the archives of Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). The Hubble Heritage Project processes and releases a small selection of the most striking images to the public.
