How to set up Calibre

It takes just a few moments to install Calibre, the installer itself is pretty self-explanatory. When finished, go ahead and launch Calibre, and we will get started.

Calibre will launch its welcome wizard for first time users, so we will go through this step by step.

The first portion of the wizard allows you to choose the default language for the program along with where it will store its files. Simply choose the default directory by clicking “Change.” From there, once set, click “Next” to move forward with the wizard.

The next step of the wizard allows you to choose which device you will use Calibre with. This allows you to convert, transfer and manage your eReader. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will be using the Amazon Kindle device as our default eReader. Click “Next” when you have set your eReader.

Now, simply select your eReader model. In this case, we will be using the Kindle 1-4 and Touch. Click “Next” after choosing your device.

Depending on which device you are using, you may have different options at this option. For the Kindle, you can utilize your e-mail address to send documents to the device as opposed to syncing it to your computer or utilizing WiFi or Whispernet.

You can enter your Kindle e-mail address which was given to you when you registered the device to your account. You also enter the e-mail address you want to “send” documents from. If you are using a Gmail or Hotmail account, you can fill in the details by clicking the icons to the right.

When your e-mail is completely set up, click “Next” once more.

You have now finished setting up Calibre.

From here, you can begin truly getting started with it.

After clicking “Finish” in the wizard, you will be greeted by the main screen of Calibre.

From here, you can do just about everything you ever wanted to with your new eReader.

Click “Preferences” to get started.

This will open the Preferences for Calibre. There are a variety of settings to go through and for most users, utilizing Calibre as is will be the best.

Click “Look and Feel.”

This gives you an idea of how complicated the settings are for Calibre. As you begin to get more familiar with the feel of Calibre, tinkering with the settings will come to you.

Head back to the main screen.

Now, double-click the “Calibre Quick Start Guide.”

This will open a new window which will introduce you to the eReader portion of Calibre. You can read page-by-page the eBooks you import into Calibre. You can change the font size, go through pages, search and more.

Once again, head back to the main screen.

Click “Add books.”

This will open a drop-down menu that will allow you to add books to Calibre’s library for you to read, convert and more.

You can add books in a variety of ways, such as adding a single book, adding books from a directory and adding from the ISBN database.

Once you select how you want to add books, Calibre will import them into fill the main screen.

Now, select a title and click “Edit metadata” in the top toolbar.

Another drop down menu will open allowing you to edit the metadata for the selected book or books. Editing the metadata can be important to help define what a book is, such as its genre, length and author details.

Click “Edit metadata individually.”

The metadata for the book you chose will show up for you to play around with. You can edit just about every detail of the book except the contents of it itself. When finished, click “Ok” to save the changes.

Now, back at the toolbar, click “Convert books.”

This is the bread and butter of Calibre. This drop down menu will allow you to convert eBook formats to that of your eReader. This can come in handy when you may have purchased an eBook in a specific format your eReader cannot view or even if you want to read a Word document format that may not be supported.

Click “Convert individually” after selecting a title to get started with this feature.

From here, you can choose what format to convert your book to. By default, it will be that of your current eReader. You can choose a variety of settings and even edit the metadata before you convert the book to be supported on your eReader.

When you are ready to convert the book, click “Ok.”

A pop-up will show you the progress of the conversion process. It does not take that long for your average book to convert but it can speed up the background process if you avoid doing much on your computer during it.

When finished, you can now see the converted book in your library.

Another nifty feature of Calibre is the ability to browse and read some of your favorite newspapers and magazines through its software. Click “Fetch news” to get started with that feature.

From here, you can now pick and choose which newspapers and magazines you want to read. If you click on one, you can choose when Calibre will automatically download new versions for you to read.

Click “Save” when you added which newspapers you want to read. You can also click “Download now” to begin reading right away.

Now, click “Save to disk.”

This will open another drop down menu that will allow you to save books to disk. This can allow you to transfer them to other devices, read them on your computer or share them with others so long as they are copyright free.

Click “Save to disk” again in the drop down menu.

This will begin saving the selected title as is in the directory you set up. It can take a few moments to save, so just let Calibre do the work for you.
