SpeedFan

Running numerous, resource sapping programs can send your computer temperature skyrocketing. Allowing your system to reach high temperatures can be seriously damaging to the internal workings of your device.

SpeedFan is a handy piece of software that can help record, report, and regulate the temperature levels of your computer or laptop. In just a few simple steps, you can maximize the use of your internal fans and keep tabs on the fluctuating temperatures being produced.

Along with this software, it is important to keep a check on computer fans as well. If a computer fan is loud or has issues, the software won’t be of any help.

How to use SpeedFan to regulate your computer temperature

To download SpeedFan, head over to their official download page and download the software. Then, simply follow the installation wizard to fully install the software.

The user interface of SpeedFan is complicated for the most part, offering extensive features and options pertaining to different areas of your computer’s cooling system. In order to cover the basics of temperature regulation, we have stuck to the main uses of SpeedFan.

Once you open SpeedFan for the first time, the program will take a few seconds to automatically scan the sensors in your computer. Once the scan is complete, you are greeted with computer temperature readings for various components like your CPU, GPU and hard drives.

Your first step is to ensure that you tick the box labelled “Automatic Fan Speed.” This will ensure that your fans will change speed depending on your system’s temperature.

Next, click “Configure.”

A new window will then present itself, displaying your various CPUs and GPUs. Ensure that each of the boxes are ticked as shown in the image above. Next, click the “Options” tab across the top of the window.

Once you have opened the options page, ensure that you click the box labelled “Set Fans to 100% on Program Exit.” Then, set “Delta Value For Fan Speeds” to 99 – the maximum amount. Both of these steps are depicted in the image above.

Now that you have completed these steps, SpeedFan will keep your fans spinning at full speed when minimized, keeping your system as cool as possible. Further customization options are available, but we do not recommend tampering with them as the default settings are all you will ever need to keep your system running smoothly.

The Good and the bad

SpeedFan is an excellent tool to use for regulating and reporting your computer’s fluctuating temperatures. To evaluate the software, we have listed the pros and cons of SpeedFan below:

Pros

  • SpeedFan is simple to install and setup, thanks to its auto-scanning feature
  • You can easily monitor the temperature of your system
  • You can easily monitor your systems CPU usage
  • Extensive options allow those with the knowledge to tweak their fanning systems to no end

Cons

  • SpeedFan doesn’t make life easy for those with limited knowledge. Pre-set, easily activated settings for different temperatures would have been nice to see
  • In order to benefit from SpeedFan’s varying fan speed settings, the program must be kept running

So there you have it. SpeedFan’s extensive options make it a dream for the computer expert but a bit of a nightmare for those who are less acquainted with their hardware. In any case, SpeedFan offers the perfect solution for temperature regulation: Keeping your system running and not burning.
