Solar chargers are becoming a go to for outdoor enthusiasts. For RVers, campers and others who are outdoors, a solar charger can make the difference in keeping your Bluetooth speaker, phone or tablet going all day long. Solar chargers come in all shapes and sizes, some better than others as the technology is still evolving.
I had the opportunity to try out BLKBOX’s 12W folding solar charger. As an avid camper, I’d been looking for a reliable solar charger and striking out so far. Let’s see if BLKBOX is up to the outdoor challenge.
How the BLXBOX 12W Folding Solar Charger Holds Up
Out of the box, this BLKBOX solar charger is easy to start using. You want to take the plastic over the solar panels off right away. If you don’t, it’ll obstruct sunlight being able to charge your devices.
The BLKBOX solar charger is capable of charging everything from your smartphone to your table to your accessories so long as they use a micro USB charger. You use the built-in cord to plug your charging cord into this solar charger, which is a bit awkward. It would’ve been nicer to have its own charging cord instead of having to carry yours with you, too. Luckily, there is a small pocket that you can store your USB cable in as well as the dongle for connecting it.

Overall, the look and feel of this BLKBOX solar charger is great. It’s lighter than I thought it would be and can easily be carried in a backpack when outdoors. It comes with two grommets so you can use carabiners to hang it on a backpack, tent or canopy for getting direct sunlight.
The biggest perk of this solar charger, compared to others, is its size. It’s truly portable and easy to carry. For those of us who hike and camp, it’s essential to ensure you’re not carrying more weight than necessary, and this charger doesn’t add much weight at all, weighing roughly a pound at most.
Out of the box, it had no charge which is to be expected. I was able to charge my Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Tab 3 in direct sun light as well as overcast weather with no issues or disruption in charging when cloud cover obstructed the sun, which is great for a solar charger.
Charging is a bit slow and depends on the amount of direct sunlight you’re getting. The more sunlight, the better the charge, which is part of using a solar charger. For the price and size, this solar charger by BLKBOX is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts concerned with keeping a phone or device charged without weighing them down.
I was able to charge my Galaxy S5 in under four hours with this charger under direct sunlight conditions. It took about another hour to hour a half under overcast conditions.
If you’re looking for a reliable solar charger, try this BLKBOX 12W Solar Charger. It’s affordable, easy to carry and works well even in overcast conditions. I was surprised by how much I liked this charger, expecting a lot less for the price involved. If you’re looking for a low-cost solar charger that gets the job done when you’re outdoors, this is a product you should consider.
