If you’re annoyed like many of us that Microsoft’s pushing the Windows 10 upgrade on Windows 7/8/8.1 users, you can remove the icon and pre-download app from your PC.

While you can opt into the Windows 10 pre-download and avoid the wait, you may want to see what happens after its official release before choosing to upgrade. After all, you do have a year to upgrade for free.

There’s two ways to remove the Windows Update that installs the Get Windows App on your PC. We’ll show you how to get rid of it.

Remove the Get Windows App

Microsoft released an optional update in April and May 2015 (KB3035583). This was the installation of the Get Windows App, which sat idle until the announcement that Windows 10 will be released worldwide on July 29th.

Getting rid of the app is easy to do with one of two methods:

  • Using Window Update to uninstall the optional update
  • Running a command line prompt to remove it

We’ll show you how to both and these steps will work in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.

The easiest way is to navigate to Windows Update and click on “View update history.”

Now, click on “Installed Updates.”

Make sure to turn on the Details display for Windows Update, then scroll through the updates for May and April until you find KB3035583.

Right-click on it and click “Uninstall.”

Once the update is uninstalled, you’ll want to restart your computer and then head back to Windows Update. Make sure to ignore the optional update and you won’t have to worry about pre-downloading or the pesky Get Windows App again.

If for some reason the above method doesn’t work or you’re having issues finding the Get Windows App update, open a Command Prompt as an Administrator.

Type in the following command click “Enter:”

wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:3035583

After it’s run, you’ll want to restart your PC and Get Windows App will be gone.

Thanks to WinAero for the instructions on using the Command Prompt to uninstall the Get Windows App.

If at any time you want the app back and want to opt in, simply download the optional update again.

Remove the Get Windows 10 App Notification Area Icon

Have you opted in to pre-download Windows 10 and just want to get rid of the Notification Area icon? It’s easy!

Click on the “Arrow” for the Notification Area, then click “Customize.”

Click on the drop down box next to the GWX icon and select “Hide icon and notifications.”

The Get Windows App icon is now hidden from your taskbar.

Microsoft is trying to make the upgrade to Windows 10 easier for Windows 7/8/8.1 users. However, many have expressed concerns with the Get Windows App being installed under the radar, even as an optional update. Now, you know how to remove it from your PC, along with the icon if you opted in.
