The Chinese company OnePlus has a reputation for building premium phones with an attractive price tag and excellent software ever since they launched their first flagship killer OnePlus One in 2014. After the success of OnePlus One, all the phones launched thereafter have achieved similar successes and a strong fan following. Now, all eyes are trained on the company waiting to see what their latest phone – the OnePlus 5 – has on offer.

With little official news about the One Plus 5 from the company itself, speculations are rife and rumors are flying thick and fast on what the new phone will have on offer. A few weeks ago, the CEO of OnePlus, Pete Lau posted a teaser on his Chinese Weibo account that suggests that their latest phone can be expected soon.

With just an illustration of workers building a phone, the post does not give much away other than to confirm that a new flagship killer is in the works. With all the anticipation and speculations around the phone, this has been called the Android launch of the year on many Android forums.

What’s in a name? Let’s Skip OnePlus 4

OnePlus has released four phones till date starting with the OnePlus One. Logically, this phone should be OnePlus 4, because OnePlus 3 was followed by a variant OnePlus 3T. But the company is skipping 4 for 5 because the number 4 is considered unlucky and is associated with death, in parts of Southeast Asia.

There were many weeks of speculation about the name of the phone till the company itself confirmed the name of the new phone in a blog post about its partnership with DxO to enhance the camera experience on the new phone.

OnePlus 5 – Design and Build

The OnePlus 3T has a premium build quality with its elegant metal body in gorgeous colors. Even though it was considered to be a success, OnePlus 3T has been discontinued to make way for OnePlus 5.

It goes to follow that the OnePlus 5 will have a better build and design. There have been rumors that the OnePlus 5 will have an all glass body with a dual camera. There are speculations that it will have a curved screen and bezel-less aesthetic similar to the Samsung Galaxy S8. There have been a few leaked images of the phone, but leaked prototypes rarely match the actual look of the product.

Authentic looking design sketches of OnePlus 5 have leaked on Weibo which show an Alert Slider on the side and dual cameras both front and rear. The sketches also show a ceramic half plate at the back to presumably improve reception.

With leaked tests showing that One Plus 5 seems to perform better than when compared to Samsung Galaxy S8 and Google Pixel. This goes to show how seriously OnePlus has taken the challenge for building a superior phone compared to its competitors.

OnePlus 5 – Camera

Smartphone cameras are getting more sophisticated and are often the reason for a phone’s success or lack of. OnePlus is aiming high with the OnePlus 5. The phone will probably have a dual rear camera, which is very plausible since flagship phones from companies like LG, Huawei, Apple, and Samsung have a dual camera system. The leaked sketches show a dual front camera system, which may not be plausible given the cost of such a system will drive up the cost of the phone considerably.

The company has announced that they are partnering with imaging experts DxO for the new phone and it will be interesting to see what this partnership will mean for the OnePlus 5. DxO is best known for creating the DxOMark, a well-known photography benchmark and this partnership should translate into better, clearer and more professional-like pictures.

There are rumors that the phone sports a 16 MP rear camera with a Sony IMX398 sensor, while other rumors suggest a 23-megapixel rear camera and a 16-megapixel front camera. With no official announcement from the company, there is no way of confirming or refuting these rumors.

The dual front and rear camera sketches have set off speculations about added augmented reality features that the phone could sport.

OnePlus 5 – Specifications

There are plenty of rumors of what is under the hood of the OnePlus 5. If the rumors are believed, it looks like the OnePlus 5 has is a veritable powerhouse of a phone. A leaked Geekbench test posted by GSM Arena shows that the phone outperforms all its peers including Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and Huawei Mate 9.

The OnePlus 5 is rumored to use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, which is the same processor that the Samsung Galaxy S8 uses. It will probably have 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage space.

Speculation about whether the phone will have a headphone jack abounds. Experts believe that the headphone jack may be retained in this model as seen in the leaked design renders. One of the OnePlus co-founders Carl Pei even conducted a poll on Twitter a while ago about the necessity of the headphone jack to a thundering affirmative response.

The phone will probably pack a 3,000mAh or 4,000mAh battery, which will support the company’s Dash Charge technology that can charge up to 60 percent in just 30 minutes. The phone will come with Android Nougat base with OnePlus’ Oxygen Operating System over it.

The OnePlus 5 will in all probabilities have a screen size of 5.5 inches with a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution. The leaked drawings and renders of the phone do not show a fingerprint scanner in the back, which suggest it will be in the front. Some rumors suggest that the scanner might be embedded on the home screen.

OnePlus 5 Release Date

All rumors are currently pointing to a summer release in June for the OnePlus 5. The teaser image released by the company on Weibo was accompanied by the words ‘Hello 5’ and the phrase ‘Hey Summer! Give me five!’ This suggests a summer launch for the phone. More news from the company will be expected in the early weeks of June.

OnePlus 5 Pricing

So far OnePlus phones have been budget phones with premium features. However, OnePlus has been steadily increasing the price of its phones and one can expect a considerable jump in price between the 3T and 5.

OnePlus 3T retails at a starting price of around $439 and it is expected that the OnePlus 5 might cost anywhere between $500 to $650, considering no expense has been spared to fit in the best components in the phone.

However it is still early days yet and with no concrete information on the full specifications of the OnePlus 5 from the company, we can only guess and fantasize about what it will be like. If you are in the market for a new Android phone, the OnePlus 5 will be a good phone to wait for.

OnePlus has always been a phone that brought premium features to the people at an affordable price. That might change, however, now that OnePlus has decided to use the cutting edge components in its new device.

The only thing that hurt the OnePlus 3T model was its camera. One Plus 5 promises a significant upgrade as well as the inclusion of a new technology that will allow it to go head to head with the best in the business. All in all, this seems to be a solid package that the OnePlus fans will appreciate.
