logo-pancake-ioHave you ever wanted to share information in a file in a read-only format? If you are a Dropbox user, there is an easy way to do just that. Using Pancake.io, you can share a text file as a web page.

There are occasions when you need to share a file or a list of files. The problem is, there are so many services out there, it’s hard to know if everyone will be able to get to or open the file. Embedding the file list in a web page or publishing the text file as a web page will cure a lot of your worries. Here is how.

How-to share files with anyone

There are a few basic steps you will need to complete for the set-up. If you do not already have a Dropbox account, you will need to sign up for one. Feel free to click this link —> Dropbox signup. If you sign up using that affiliate link and download the desktop app, we both get 250mb of extra space.. just sayin’.

When you give up an email address and make a password, you will need to authorize Pancake.io to have access to your Dropbox account.

When you grant access, Pancake.io will add a file to your Apps folder. The file is labeled Pancake.io. Ant text file you place into this folder can be viewed as a webpage. You don’t need to know HTML to format the page but can instead use simpler Markdown formatting (see the Markdown cheat sheet).

How to view a text file as a webpage

Once you have some text files added, it is time to share them on the web. There are a couple of ways you can share them. The first is as a stand-alone web page. You can share the text file this way by logging into your Pancake.io account and clicking on the Files tab to the left of the page.

You will see a list of your files. If you click on one of them, a new tab or page will open. This is how the page will look for anyone who will view it via the link you send them.

The other way you can share your files, is to embed your file list into a webpage. This would be well used if you have several files you want to share. There are a few choices in the drop down menu and some boxes to select options.
