Google-Phone-GalleryWhen it is time to pick out a new phone, the choices are a bit confusing. Doesn’t it seem like there is a new phone out every other week? This is especially true for Android devices since the Android OS is used by several manufacturers as a part of their smartphones and tablets. So how do you compare and decide which Android Device would be perfect for you?

Google has made a handy little site to help you decide. Google Phone Gallery is a site listing most of the carriers and phones sold worldwide.

How does it work

There are methods to sort your device and carrier choices. Once you filter out the need not information, you can start to choose a device by comparing three devices at a time.  The comparison page has a lot of useful information like hardware sizes, software versions, places to buy, carriers offering the device and so on.

Filtering out the need-not

When you first visit the site, you will need to do a little filtering. There may be come devices that are simply not available in your country or through your cellular provider. That being said, the country drop down is a good place to start. Choose your country from the list.

Once you have seen the devices available in your country, it’s time to select the carrier. This will show the devices available from that carrier only. There may be some smaller carriers where all of the devices are not listed, or the devices may be a little out of date. It may not be a bad idea to refer to the cellular carrier’s site to verify the models are current.

If you are moving to a different country or changing cellular carriers and know the phone you would like, you can also filter by the device manufacturer.

After all of your filters are in place, it’s time to compare devices. That’s what you came to the site for after all, isn’t it? The way the comparison works is you can choose up to three devices. Underneath (or next to, depending on the view you are in) there will be a button that reads Add to the comparison.

Comparing devices

Comparing devices is the daunting part. While the specs will help you choose the right device for your needs, you still have to decide what you want to do. With most of the Android devices, you don’t need to worry if the device can do what you want. Come up with actions like:

  • Watch videos online
  • Access Google Docs
  • Open PDFs
  • Take brilliant pictures
  • Download a lot of applications
  • Hook your device up to a larger screen
  • Has the option of an external keyboard
  • Has navigation

Get the idea?

Some specs that may help you decide may be:

  • Connectivity – This is what type cellular towers your device can connect to, as well as the other wireless connections (e.g. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.)
  • Storage and memory – Many times people overlook the internal storage of mobile devices. With Android, the apps (or a portion of the apps) are stored on the device itself. So if your phone or tablet has 128mb of usable space, you won’t have much room for large games and 10,000 SMS messages.
  • OS version – The older Operating Systems are somewhat limited when it comes to things like video, moving apps to the SD card and acting as a Wi-Fi Hotspot.

Conclusion

Google has a great thing going here with this site. It is a good way for you to compare a few devices to each other and not have the propaganda of the Manufacturer or Cellular carrier trying to sway your choice.
