Greasemonkey scripts which add new features to any website, can be installed on Google Chrome, but managing them isn’t straightforward.
Tampermonkey, lets users install, manage and change the settings for any scripts, just like Greasemonkey addon does in Firefox.
We love using Greasemonkey scripts in Firefox to add new functionality to any given website. Google Chrome has native support for handling greasemonkey scripts and it installs them like any other Chrome extension. Managing these scripts and customizing the options becomes much more convenient with the Tampermonkey extension.
Tampermonkey – Easy Management of Greasemonkey scripts in Chrome:
Many userscripts at Userscripts.org are created keeping in mind the Greasemonkey addon for Firefox. In the Chrome browser, most of these scripts can be installed with ease, but you can’t change or customize the options for these scripts.
After installing Tampermonkey, whenever you install a Greasemonkey script – this extension provides a lot of details about that script. Once the script is installed, it also lets you select the various options related to the it, which will make the script function according to your requirements.
Lets take the example of the Yousable TubeFix for Chrome userscript. This script lets you customize the YouTube page, the default video size and the quality. You can change how the Channels page looks and has several other features.
You can install it directly without using any script management extension like Tampermonkey and it works perfectly on Chrome.
The script does its job well, but the options used with this script are the default ones – preset by the developer. There is no way to customize this script to your needs.
As you can see, we do not have any link for changing the scripts’ options, like most other Chrome extensions.
Same Script – Working With Tampermonkey:
Now we see how Tampermonkey can help us manage userscripts better. We uninstall the above script and see how it works with this extension.
After enabling Tampermonkey we install the script once again.
Unlike last time, we get detailed information about the script before we install it.
When you click on the Tampermonkey button on the extensions toolbar, you can change the options for any scripts you have installed. It shows a list of all the scripts you have installed and lets you configure them right from this pop-up. Just click on the configuration option to customize the settings for any script.
The script we installed provides a lot of customization options, however we didn’t have access to them before using the Tampermonkey extension.
This script lets you adjust options for the YouTube video page, the channel pages as well as all pages on YouTube. You can choose the default video quality, allow or deny auto play and auto buffering and many other things.
Another important advantage of using Tampermonkey is users can enable or disable any script, without going to the Extensions page. You can tweak the script or delete it from the options page itself. You get much better control on the usescripts you are using and remove and add new scripts with a click of a button. Download this extension from the Google Chrome extensions gallery.
