VLC Media Player is universally known for its ability to play almost all media file formats under the sun. It’s the Swiss army knife video players – since it is capable of playing almost any video format you throw at it.
It is free and open source software, which has performed exceptionally on Windows as well as Linux and OS X platforms.
Now the VLC Player has been released for iPad as well as the iPhone and iPod Touch devices.
VLC Media Player For iPad:
The selection of video players was pretty limited on the iPad, and one had to stick to the Apple approved formats for a satisfactory video experience. But with VLC in the picture this is going to change drastically.
Currently it can play video formats like AVI (Xvid and DivX), M4V, MKV, even VOB. However, it handles the AVI files better than MKV format.
If it’s difficult for VLC too play a certain format like a HD MKV, because of iPad’s processing limitations, the VLC App would let you know about this.
The Player controls are just as simple to operate as in the PC version. The progress bar auto-hides when not in use and the controls for Playing a video along with back and forward options are present.
This would help a lot of guys who prefer not to convert media to specific formats to view it on their iPad, since VLC can pretty much handle everything.
VLC Media Player for iPhone:
The VLC App for the iPhone was released today, and it works on the same lines as its counterpart on the iPad shown above.
This version of VLC media player bring a few new features:
- The App now runs on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the recent iPod touches
- You can now delete files from the application, without having to go through iTunes
