Nowadays we find ourselves multitasking and working with more and more applications on our computer simultaneously. There are times when we need a certain window in the foreground like the Calculator, Webcam while talking to our friends or simple a notepad to take quick notes while reading or watching a video. DeskPins is a small Windows utility that lets us do that with ease.

DeskPins - Always On Top - Google Docs with Calculator

DeskPins can be used to keep any application window always on top, that is, to keep it above all other program windows. Just grab a pin from the DeskPins icon in the system notification area (a.k.a. taskbar tray) and click on any window. This functionality is identical to the “Always on Top” setting found in some programs. With DeskPins you can add this feature to any program!

Installing and Using DeskPins:

You can download and install DeskPins from the link provided below. Once installed DeskPins icon shows up in the System Tray. You can right-click on it to view the options.

DeskPins Taskbar Menu

The first option allows you to enter the “pin mode” which changes your mouse pointer into a pin. You can then click on any program window that you want to keep on top and the pin shows up next to the minimize button. This window will always stay on top of all other windows. This window wouldn’t go in the background from now, you can however minimize it manually.

You can also double-click on the DeskPins icon to get into the pin mode.

When you don’t need to keep a program window on top, just hover your mouse pointer on the pin and it shows a small cross which indicates that you can remove this pin.

Deskpins - Remove Pins Manually

Using the second option in the right-click context you can remove all the pins automatically without needing to remove them manually one at a time.

DeskPins Options and Settings:

DeskPins gives you a number of customization options. You can change pin color or even set some windows to be pinned automatically.

DeskPins Options

In the first tab “Pins” you can change the color of the pins that show up on the windows. The default color for the pins is red which I find a bit too bright for my taste, so I used white instead.

You can change Pin Mode activation as well. If you want to enter the pin mode the click mode quickly, you can select single click activation.

Automatically Pin any Program Window:

Deskpins Auto-Pin a Program

This feature makes Deskpins stand out from other similar programs. When you open a program you can set it to always be on top automatically.

Autopin any Program

To do this click on “Add” in the Autopin options. You would get the Edit Rule window. Drag the Crosshair icon on the window that you’d want to be on top. Repeat the same process for the Class option. Now every time you would open that window, it would always be on top of all other programs. Cool eh!?

Conclusion:

Deskpins is really useful utility if you need to keep any window on top. Its really small in size (~100 kb). It takes up very less resources and does its job perfectly.Let us know if you liked this nifty little utility and if you know any alternatives for the same in the comment section below.
