For those of you who frequently use Wikipedia or any link-heavy site (ex: reddit) and would love an easier way to view the links without losing your place on the page, a new Chrome extension is about to blow your mind.

Called NiftySplit, this extension will split your Chrome viewing area into two side-by-side windows, showing the link in a separate window. This is a great tool to have for comparing things or for just using a page as a reference. And even better, the extension now has multi-monitor support.

Our guide will outline how to use the Chrome extension NiftySplit to split the Chrome into two side-by-side windows.

Getting the NiftySplit Extension

Before anything, you’ll need to add the extension for NiftySplit to your Chrome browser, which can be downloaded from the Chrome Web Store here.

Click “Free” to add the extension to Chrome.

After installing the extension, a “Getting started” page for NiftySplit will open.

Here you will find all of the shortcuts you need to use the extension fully, such as starting the program by right-clicking any link, how to use the program on more than one monitor and how to shut it down – just close one of the windows.

Using NiftySplit

The great thing about NiftySplit is that it doesn’t run automatically. It’s up to you to decide whether or not you want to start a NiftySplit session.

When you are on a page that you feel requires NiftySplit’s help, you can start a new NiftySplit session by right-clicking any link and selecting “Open as NiftSplit window.”

After selecting this option, a new Chrome window will open. When it opens the second window, the extension will shrink the size of the original window so that both windows can be viewed fully on one monitor – side by side.

Don’t forget, you can go into the “Options” via the “Settings” area in Chrome to change how the extension responds.

In the settings section you can change the behaviour of various actions the extension performs. You can control if the extension should open the links in a new tab or overwrite a current one or control how exactly the left or the right window behaves when you interact with it.

Conclusion

Almost anyone will love this extension, from students to those who love watching TV online, NiftySplit is one of the best ways to view links without losing your place online. Also, when using NiftySplit make sure your taskbar is set at the bottom of your screen versus the left.

Users have reported that this extension does not work as seamlessly as it should when the taskbar is placed to the left or right. Hopefully the developer will sort out this issue in the future updates for the extension.
