Speakers are an essential part of laptops. If you listen to music or watch movies and videos frequently on your laptop, you need working speakers with good sound quality. All the laptops come with in-built speakers, and if these laptop speakers are not working as expected, it can cause real trouble.
The experience of using the laptop can be compromised if there is no sound from the speakers. The sound not working issue is common, and many of us have faced this while using laptops and computers.
How To Fix The Laptop Speaker Not Working Issue
The reason for malfunctioning speakers is a change in settings, audio drivers issue, or some temporary glitch. With the help of the solutions listed below, you can quickly fix your speakers and get them working again.
1. Check the Volume
Many times we accidentally mute the volume of the system by pressing a shortcut key. You can check if the volume is muted or not and unmute it if required by following the instructions mentioned below.
To check the volume status, navigate to the volume icon seen next to the system notification. Make sure it does not have a cross mark next to it, as shown in the image below.
To unmute the volume, click on the same volume icon seen on the taskbar. The volume details will be displayed in the small window; click on the volume sign on that window to enable sound on your laptop.

2. Restart your Laptop

3. Run the Audio Troubleshooter

Step 1: Open the Settings app by pressing the Windows key + I. Click on System.
Step 2: Go to Sound from the left panel of System settings.
Step 3: Lastly, under Master volume, click on Troubleshoot.

4. Check Audio Jack
The audio jack has audio sensors that disable the laptop speakers automatically when headphones are connected to it. Sometimes, the sensors have glitches and can get jammed, thus disabling the laptop speaker. It can further stop the laptop speaker from working.
You can plug earphones/headphones or any other audio device into the audio jack and remove it after a few minutes in such a scenario. The jammed audio sensors will be normal again, and the speakers will be enabled. Note: We don’t recommend inserting toothpicks or other sharp objects into the audio jack, which can permanently damage it.
5. Restart Audio Services To Fix Laptop Speaker Not Working Issue
If the audio services are stopped abruptly, you can face sound not working on the laptop. You can restart the audio services to avoid issues with the speaker and sound in your device. Follow the steps mentioned below to restart different audio services available on your Windows 10 system.
Step 1: Type services.msc in the search menu. Open the Services app from the search result.
Step 2: Search for Windows Audio and right-click on it. Select Restart from the context menu.
Step 3: Similarly, restart Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services.
Once done, check if the speakers function again. If not, you may need to tweak in audio drivers and registry to get the issue fixed.
6. Make Changes in the Registry
The registry is the hierarchical database that contains many settings and other details. Modifying the registry can help you fix the laptop speakers not working issue in Windows 10. It is always recommended to back up the registry before modifying it. After backing up the registry, make the following changes to it.
Step 1: Open Run by pressing Windows key + R and type regedit there. Click OK.
Step 2: Once the Registry Editor opens, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMDevices\Audio\Render
Step 3: Right-click on the Render folder and select Permissions from the context menu.
Step 4: Click on Users seen under Group or user names and then check the Allow checkbox next to Full Control.
Step 5: Click on Apply, followed by OK to save the changes.
After making the above-mentioned changes, restart your system and check if the laptop speaker not working issue is fixed or not.
7. Roll Back Audio Drivers
If you manually updated your audio drivers with an unstabilized version, it can cause the laptop’s sound issues. As the device drivers in Windows play an important role in functioning the hardware components, it is essential to have driver software that is not buggy. To fix this, you can roll back the driver software to the previous stabilized version.
Step 1: Open Device Manager by searching for it in the start menu.
Step 2: Next, expand Sound, video, and game controllers and right-click on the audio driver.
Select Properties from the context menu.
Step 3: Go to the Driver tab in the Audio driver properties window and click on Roll Back Driver.
Follow the instruction wizard to complete the rollback process. Once you roll back the driver software to the previous stable version, check if the speakers are working correctly.
8. Update Audio Drivers
The outdated drivers can cause problems with laptop speakers. You can update the device drivers manually or use some third-party software to do it for you. To update the drivers manually, open Device Manager.
When the Device Manager opens, search for Sound, video, and game controllers and expand it. Next, right-click on the audio driver and select Update Driver.
You can now follow the on-screen wizard to update the audio drivers.
9. Reinstall Audio Drivers
If update and rollback didn’t work, you could reinstall the audio driver to fix the laptop speakers not working issue. Follow the steps mentioned below to reinstall the audio drivers.
Step 1: Open the Device Manager and then right-click on the audio drivers. Click on the Uninstall device from the context menu.
Step 2: When asked for confirmation, click on Yes to continue the process of uninstalling drivers.
Once the audio driver software is completely removed, you can restart the system, so that Windows can install the drivers for you on its own.
Alternatively, you can click on Action in the menu bar and then on Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the audio drivers.
Now, check the laptop speaker by playing some music or video.
